Cleaning and disassembling the Grease Gun

A pneumaticgrease gun is a widely used tool that finds applications in automobile shops, factories and everywhere else where heavy machinery is used. The grease gun is required for keeping the moving parts running smoothly. The seal in the cartridge barrel and the valve plug of the pneumatic grease gun should be replaced every now and then to ensure that grease flows out smoothly and evenly at the desired pressure.
Here are the steps to cleaning and disassembling the grease gun.
  •  You may use a wrench to disconnect the air pipe and remove the rotary coupling.
  • The rotary coupling of the grease gun is a nut present below the pressure gauge.
  •  You may be required to turn this in the anticlockwise direction.
  •  Next remove the pin from the trigger of the grease gun using a ball peen hammer.
  • Pull out the trigger lever and clean this part using a solvent.
  • Using tweezers you can remove the rubber ring seal present in the piston bore of the grease gun.

Cleaning the Grease Gun

A grease gun finds use in many applications around your home and in automobiles. The grease gun helps you spray grease onto the bearings and other moving parts to ensure that they move smoothly. This helps prevent damaged due to friction.
Naturally, to keep your grease gun in top working condition, you must clean it regularly. This ensures that the grease flows out evenly and smoothly.

To clean the grease gun you can use old towels and gentle anti grease soap. You may also use a little water and mild dish washing soap or hand soap. As per the manual of the grease gun, remove the old cartridge of the gun, and wipe of the grease in the cartridge chamber using a cloth.

Next, wipe of the excess grease from the nozzles and extension hoses that you might have attached to the grease gun. It is important to clean the debris, metal pieces, glass shards and all the old dried up grease from the grease gun

Getting the most out Of the grease gun

The grease gun manual is an important document that can help you make the most out of the gun. By reading the manual you can prevent the grease gun from malfunctioning.  You can also read the safety tips mentioned in this document.
Users of the grease gun should note that grease is discharged at a high speed; so pointing the gun towards someone’s hands or face can cause serious injuries. One should also not touch the nozzle as the grease is highly pressurized. The greasing hose attachments should be also replaced every now and then as the high pressure can cause deterioration of this attachment. One should use protective goggles and gloves to prevent the grease from entering the eyes.
Finally it should be noted that the trivalent chromium plating often makes the gun appear discolored. But owners should be aware that there is no problem with the functioning of the grease gun.

Preparing the grease gun prior to use

These are the steps you need to follow to prepare the grease gun for use:
·         Attach the nozzle or hose to the grease gun outlet.
·         Fill the grease depending on the type of grease gun you have purchased. The instructions will accompany the gun.
·         Before greasing, wipe the grease nozzle and the fitting. Pump the lever to remove the older grease that may be present.
·         You need to maintain the grease gun and check for any dirt and sand that may have accumulated in the lubrication inlet. You may also need to use force in case the grease has dried up.
·         Grease does not get discharged easily when the grease gun is new. In such cases, be sure to fully open or close the lever.
·         While attaching the new hose attachment, you may need a wrench to open the nozzle of the grease gun.
